A tomato plant is 12 inches tall and grows 1.5 inches per week. Another plant is 6 inches tall, and grows 2 inches per week. when will they be the same height?
How would you write an equation for this? I know they are the same in the 12th week, they're both 30 inches tall, but i'm not sure how to set the problem up.
How would you write an equation for this question?
[05]
Let us assume that their height will be the same after x weeks
Therefore according to the problem,
12+1.5x=6+2x
Reply:w = number of weeks
height of plant? = 12 + 1.5w
height of plant? = 6 + 2w
Find w such that
12 + 1.5w = 6 + 2w
6 = 0.5w
12 = w
In 12 weeks:
height of plant? = 12 + 1.5*12 = 30 inches
height of plant? = 6 + 2*12 = 30 inches
Reply:Alright, with the tomato plant it start off at 12 inches. Since that is a constant, it doesn't change. Next, for x amount of weeks, it grows 1.5 inches, so 1.5x +12 is how high it is each week. For the other plant, it starts out at 6 and for x weeks grows 2, so you could say it is 2x + 6 inches tall.
If you want them to be the same hight, set them equal, so you get:
2x+6=1.5x+12
Simplify out and you get
.5x=6, Multiply by 2 to get x=12, so 12 weeks.
Reply:Let X be the # of weeks and Y is the height in inches
The first plant is : Y = 1.5X + 12
second plant: Y = 2X + 6
To solve you could graph them or set them equal, because thet are both equal to Y
Reply:1.5x + 12 = 2x + 6
x=number of weeks and you add the already grown heights
Reply:12+1.5t=6+2t
t equals weeks
Reply:let number of weeks as x
12 + 1.5 x = 6 + 2x
Then solve the problem.
Reply:let number of weeks as x
12 + 1.5 x = 6 + 2x
Then solve the problem.
Reply:12 + 1.5X = 6 + 2X
Where X is equal to the number of weeks.
12 + 1.5(12) = 6 +2(12)
30=30
