How long does Round Up stay active?

I have a small yard that is weeds. I want to kill them with Round up. Then I want to plant some grass seed in some parts of it and in other parts I want to add an inch or so of top soild first (to bring these areas up to level), and then plant grass seed. I've been told that round up is basically inert on the surface of a plant after as little as 30 minutes. Is this true? Or would I need to wait several days before putting down new seed?

Roundup is readily broken down by soil microorganisms BUT if you have a soil that is primarily comprised of sand, it could leach and remain active for a long period of time. I don't think you'll encounter any problems with what you've described.

To avoid any possible problems, it would be a good idea to spread some compost and a little manure prior to seeding. The compost and manure contain lots of beneficial bacteria and fungi which will help wth the germination and establishment of your seed as well as help break down the Roundup you've applied.

Hope this answered your question! Good luck with your lawn!
