I thought it might be cutworms so I used some cutworm granules around the base of each plant. That didn't work so I sprayed with insect spray and that didn't work. The cut is usually about 2 inches up from the base of the plant.
What is causing my hostas to break off?
Do you have deer in your area? That is what they do, just snap off the leaves and leave the stem. Try planting some onions or allium plants near by or check for deer resistant plants.
Reply:I am going to take a wild guess and say it's slugs. Put some beer out in shallow metal lids. The beer will eventually get stale and attract the slugs and they well drown. You can also buy a commercially prepared slug repellent.
Reply:It is squirls or snails. Snails will cut them off and you never even see them.
Reply:Sorry, but I don't know what a hostas is. Sounds like a body part. Hope it didn't hurt.
Reply:is there bees there
Reply:mine do that too, i think it must be the bees then
Reply:Sounds like you got some hungry Deer in your area!
They will munch them down, and leave about 2 inches from the bottom......Urinate around the area, every 2-3 days, that will keep the deer away.....If it rains that night, urinate again the next day.
It really works.....I ask all the Men folk to mark the perimeter of my gardens all the time. (Deer Hunters never pee where they hunt!)
