I have some cactus plants and I have some questions about how to care for them.?

I bought some new cactus plants and I have some questions.

1. My cactus plants are about 1 inch tall and it is in a small pot. The pot isn't much bigger then the plant, there is a bit of room between the plant and the pot should I change the the plant into a bigger pot?

2. If I do move my plants how do I do that?

3. How much should I water it and when should I water it?

4. What kind of soil does it need? It has some white kind of soil that is in the pot. It looks dry but I don't know.

5. Can it be in direct sunlight during the summer, fall, spring and fall?

6. What kind of temperature range should it be around?

THATS IT FOR NOW!!!

THANKS!!

I have some cactus plants and I have some questions about how to care for them.?
1. No, not until there is NO room left in the pot.

2. Carefully - only joking - use very thick, tough gloves and put a barrier around the plant [like rolled up newspaper, thick cloth or similar] to help protect the plant against damage and yourself against prickles.

3. Cactus retain their required water supply [hence the thick, succulent stems/leaves] so almost none. Just once a week, give it a quick 'mist' with a spray bottle of water. They get most of their requirement from the air and very occasional rain - deserts - not much, if any rain!

4. Cactus thrive on the poorest soil in the world. What you are looking at is 'vermiculite' a kind of foam used in the gardening world to help the plants roots adhere thereby giving them a little stability [something to hold onto]. And yes it looks dry because it is, but don't worry that's how it should be.

5. Absolutely, as in the desert they are in full sunlight [except at night of course], so they will be fine all year round.

6. The hotter the better, usually. If it gets too cold, put them in a hot house or similar, 'til the weather warms up again.

Good luck and enjoy your plants - they will give you much pleasure and beauty. There many wonderful books on cacti, I'm sure you would really enjoy too.
Reply:Put on a pair of leather gloves and re-pot them all into one big shallow pot full of sand with a little soil mixed in. Water only lightly or let the rain do it for you. Leave em outside in the sunshine and feed them a little miracle grow when you transplant them. They are easy. They like it HOT and dry.
Reply:It would help if I knew the exact type of cacti you own however in general most cacti don't grow at a very fast rate, re-potting is not needed until they grow larger, but take it out (use leather gloves!!) and check the root ball if it looks cramped go ahead, they are pretty hardy as well so moving should not be a problem, water (this is why I'd need to know the genius) most are used to a once a month drenching, as they are cactus they are used to very hot temps and alot of sun, your local gardening shop should have a cactus potting soil already prepared.

Hope I have been helpful to you.
Reply:Cactus plants have a very tiny root system.

If you want it in a larger pot put some gloves on and get a spoon and go around your plant and move it to the larger pot. It will need sun, do not put in a window with West sun or you will burn it with the sun coming thru a window. I used to look at the weather reports and if it rained in Arizona I would pour a bit of water on top of my cactus plants. Had many beautiful ones that even bloomed. Any sandy soil is good, they are used to few perks in the dirt. I would not worry about the temp of the plant. If the plant starts to look shriveled up then it needs a bigger drink.
Reply:just don't sit on 'em!!!--that'll ruin your day!!!
Reply:well i kinda know a lot about cactus since i do live in a desert. First off it all depends on what kind of cactus it is. If it starts growing fast then you'll probably have change to a bigger pot. You don't need to water it a lot. Cactus are accustomed to going without water for months. Once the soil get dry give it some water. But not too much or you'll rot it since cactus store all the water. I really don't think it matters on what kind of soil it needs. It can be in sun year round. But if you have it outside and you live where it is cold then you'll need to cover it at night to make sure it doesn't freeze.

Hopefully that helped a bit!
