Does anyone know anything about gardening?

I know your only supposed to plant flowers 9 inches apart from each other, but what if you planted it near the edge of the pot? Is that ok, or will it ruin the flowers? Also, if you plant them closer than 9 inches apart, what will happen?

Does anyone know anything about gardening?
It's only a problem if you plant them close together. The root masses will combine and they will fight for water and nutrients. You just need to make sure they don't fight to survive.

Planting on the edge of a pot will only direct the roots downward. It isn't a problem really.
Reply:they will be ok ..just stunted and bushyer because you has cramped them up and if theys too close to the edge they might fall off...haha
Reply:for container gardening, you can plant closer together. this is often done in "color baskets" that can be bought at nurseries and garden centers.. you can make your own.

The thing is, you have to feed more often for container gardening. Get some water soluble plant food and use it once a week when watering your plants. this will give you very full containers in a short amount of time.

the spacing that is given on plant tags is recommended to allow space between plants in a normal garden bed, that's all. bear in mind that plants never grow (in the wild) exactly 9" apart.. irregular spacing will allow a more natural effect.

If you are mixing plant types, bear in mind that the fastest growing plant will eventually take over the plant. Bear this in mind as you choose your plants.
Reply:I have planted flowers for years. I have flowers crammed in pots. To be honest they look better that way. You will see in magazines etc. these beautiful pots - look and see how full they are. Just remember to fertilize and water well. Another tip is that in each pot plant three types of plants- a trailing plant that will spill over the side and grow downward. Something like sweet potato vine or creaping jenny. A mounding plant like begonia and a taller plant like lantana or geranium.
Reply:Usually nothing.

There are a select few flowers that will actually fight for the nutrients in the dirt. If you have rich topsoil and lightly fertilize regularly, you shouldn't have much of a problem.

All plants are suppose to be a certain length apart so their roots can spread. When they have room they spread horozontally so they can get the warmth thru the dirt. If there is no room they will grow their roots downward which may be good as far as watering is concerned but they need the heat from the sun. Most flowers don't have a problem even when you plant them right next to each other.

Rose bushes are the only plants I have ever had a problem with. Most roses don't like to be touching another roses roots, Don't laugh its true.
Reply:I have a big barrel that I fill with all sorts of different flowers each spring, I plant them at least 4 inches apart and I do put some near the edge. The trick to keeping it looking nice is removing spent flowers right away, fertilize once a month and water well every other day.....good luck
