How would you solve this problem?

A tomato plant is 12 inches tall and grows 1.5 inches per week. Another plant is 6 inches tall, and grows 2 inches per week. How many weeks will it take for them to be the same height?

How would you solve this problem and show the work?

How would you solve this problem?
y=12 + 1.5x

z=6+ 2x

set y=z

12+1.5x = 6+ 2x

6=.5x

x=12 weeks
Reply:ok create an equation for the first situation y = 12 + 1.5x

second situation : y = 6 + 2x

when they are the same y will be the same

12+1.5x = 6+2x

12-6 = 2x - 1.5x

6 = .5x

12 = x

x = 12 = no of weeks
Reply:didn't you just post this, must i tell you again

maybe i won't answer, hmmm, to answer or not to answer......ok

x=number of weeks

1.5x(representing the 1st tomato plant's growth each week) + 12 (it's height already)=2x(growth of the 2nd plant's each week) + 6(it's height already) soo, it's just math from there

1.5x + 12 = 2x +6

1.5x + 12 - 6 = 2x + 6 - 6

1.5x-1.5x+6=2x-1.5x

6=.5 x

6/.5=x

12=x

simple enough 4 ya?
Reply:Let's let W=weeks

12+1.5w=6+2w

So now you have an equation were both are equal. Now all you have to do is solve it.

12+1.5w=6+2w

12 - 6+1.5w=6 - 6+2w Subtract 6 from each side.

6 + 1.5w=2w Simplify

6 + 1.5w - 1.5w=2w - 1.5w Subtract 1.5w form each side

6 = .5w Simplify

6/.5=.5w/.5 Divide each side by .5

12 = w Simplify

So it will take 12 weeks for them to be the same length.
Reply:try a line graph or

plant A

week 0 12

week 1 13.5

week 2 15

week 3 16.5

week 4 18

week 5 19.5

week 6 21

week 7 22.5

week 8 24

week 9 25.5

week 10 27

week 11 28.5

week 12 30

plant B

week 0 6

week 1 8

week 2 10

week 3 12

week 4 14

week 5 16

week 6 18

week 7 20

week 8 22

week 9 24

week 10 26

week 11 28

week 12 30

so 12 weeks
Reply:Basically, you'd set up an equation that looks like this:

12 + 1.5x = 6 + 2x

(where x equals the number of weeks)

Then just solve.

12+1.5x=6+2x

12=6+0.5x

6=0.5x

12=x

12 weeks.
