Identify this tree or plant?

This tree (or plant) was given to us and we can not figure out what it is.

It is about 3 1/2 feet tall with a thin, green stem. The leaves are 6-8 inches across.

Any clues or identification is appreciated.

Identify this tree or plant?
its a herpaficus (hur-pa-fy-cus)
Reply:Judging by the leaves and doing an image search on msn for "houseplants with big leaves" and then looking for a plant with a similar name, I do believe this particular one to be a philodendron. I could be wrong, but that's what it looks like.
Reply:It could be a flowering maple ? Have you considered asking a garden centre.
Reply:I am pretty sure it is a tulip tree and here is a link that I

found: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuliptree

You can probably find more pictures by Googling Tulip Tree.

It's pretty funny that you asked this question and that I saw it today because my husband and I were just commenting last night about a tree that has started growing in our flower bed. I was trying to remember the name of it and your question prompted me to check it out online. It is actually growing in the middle of our butterfly bush. I thought it was part of the actual bush itself but now that it is bigger, I can see that it's not. So, we think we may need to transplant both the tree and the bush to the middle of our yard so that we don't destroy either.

These trees get very tall so you might want to plant it in an area of your yard where it will have plenty of space to grow - and away from the foundation of your house.

Good luck with your new tree!! It'll be a great shade tree one day :-)

On second thought .... I did another Google search and it may not be a tulip tree - check out this picture:

Maybe your best bet is to take it to a good gardening center and ask them for advice -before it gets too big :-)
Reply:if the plant or tree unusually grows quick and the stem is standing tall and strong, and if it's leaves curl when its about to rain u know its a tree. ull just have to wait it out and see what it grows into. and i recomend transplanting every 1-2 months.
