Can a tree survive if part of it is cut off with a weed wacker?

I recently planted a Golden Rain Tree approx. 3 feet tall. While weed whacking around a fence the weed whacker bounced off the fence and hit the tree. It cut off about 6- 8 inches off of the top of the tree and I was wondering if I killed it or if it will survive and continue to grow. Any advice would be great.

Yes. It will be alright. It will rejuvenate itself.
Reply:Yes it will be fine, as long as it wasnt a little stick one and you cut off most of it.
Reply:yes, trees are like weeds.

They just keep coming back.
Reply:it could survive but anytime you cut a piece of the tree off like that you are just opening the tree up to disease problems. You will probably have to prune the tree to get it into a better shape as it more than likely looks bad right now. Keep an eye on the tree and see what it does, it could be fine or it could end up with problems.
