When is it safe to use weed killer on a new fescue lawn?

Hi, I planted my lawn with tall fescue seeds 2 1/2 weeks ago. I applied starter fertilizer on it. The grass did pretty well and we mowed it at 2 inches for the first time yesterday. But it has a lot of weeds (Broad leaf, dollar weed). Is it safe to use weed killer at this time? Do you know of any product that will do the job but will not harm the young grass? Is spray better than granules? I am in Texas and my lawn has moderate shade. Thanks!

After your first mowing it is safe
Reply:i donno.
Reply:I say go for it, just make sure you're not using a weed and grass killer. If you're really worried about it, why not try a small patch that is hidden away? I don't think you'd have any problems, I have new fescue that I just mowed for the first time last weds, put some weed/crabgrass killer on it and it's fine so far.
Reply:The chemicals that are used in the weed killers are selective in the plants that they kill and will not harm the grass. I used to apply Broad leaf 40. I do not know if they still make it but it worked fine. I think that the granules might be better in that you will not have a tendency to over apply. Whatever you feel like using will do just fine.
