I have a baby RES turtle in a 20 gallon long tank. Could I add fish or frogs to the tank with him?

My baby turtle is about 2 inches in length and he seems lonely in there by himself. I was wondering if it would be okay if I added some bigger fish to the tank or even a frog or two. I know he would eat smaller fish. The water level is only about 4 inches deep and I have a waterfall type filtration system and some live plants that float along the top. Is there anything that he would be compatible with? And on a different note I have noticed that he has gold flecks on his shell. Is this normal? I am new at this! Thanks!

You might want to check out the site www.allturtles.com . They have some great pictures of how your cage should be set up and care sheets . You should have at least a 20 gallon aquarium for one turtle . The temps , should be 72- 80 F.You will need a heat lamp, and a good UVB light . Lights should be on 12 hours and off 12 hours . You should have the water much deeper with an area that he can climb out of the water onto land . You may need to make it like steps going up to a flat area for him to sun himself on . Other than maybe getting another turtle of the same sex and species later I would not add fish or frogs . He would probably eat them eventually anyways , LOL . Hope that helps .As fars as the gold flacks , I don't know but you might find the answers at the web site I mentioned . Another good site is www.repticzone.com
Reply:In a 20 gal. one turtle is enough. He is going to get plenty bigger. He will also eat almost anything you put in there with him, maybe not now but soon. He will even eat the plants. Also they have submersible filters so you will not have to put up with that noise of the water all the time. Please make sure he has a basking area, he will need to dry out or his shell will rot. I have not noticed any flecks of color on mine but who knows. Good Luck with the turtle and be sure to look up some sites that show how to care for them.
Reply:I wouldn't my friend has a turtle and she put fish in with it and he ate it I wouldn't besides 1 turtle is big enough for a 20gallon tank...
Reply:Go for it, most turtles love live food.
Reply:I have 4 RES turtles in a 55 gallon tank. They are about 5-6 inches each. My turtles have managed to eat just about everything I have put in there, but mine seem to have a hard time catching dark grayish fish. They will get them, but it has taken them as long as a month to. I'm not sure if that will work with your turtle, but if not you should think of getting him a companion turtle. Do make sure he has somewhere dry he can go, but also give him plenty of swimming room. My turtles have a log, but the tank is almost full underneath, and they have loved it for over two years now. Good luck, they make great pets. PS, do look into a submersible filter, it cleans better, and is quieter. (( make sure if it's a 20 gal tank you use a filter that is made for twice that, turtles can get messy ))
