Sweep Potato Plant?

I noticed today that our fruit basket had a plant growing in it. A sweet potato had started to grow, and had burst through its wrapping (it was a microwave-ready potato.) I had always wanted to do that thing where you put the toothpicks through the potato and suspend it in a glass of water, but we were out of toothpicks. Instead I just put it in a coffee mug (plants up, obviously,) and put about 2 1/2 inches of water into the cup with it. It's sitting in a windowsill as we speak.

So... what's going to happen? Will it grow roots? Can I just plant it in a pot? How big of a pot? Is there anything special I need to do to take care of a sweet potato plant? Thanks

Sweep Potato Plant?
I know a lady who grew one sweet potato, and started it out much in the same fashion as yours, for over 10 years! The same plant grew all around her kitchen window, and it wound itself around and grew beautifully. She loved it and said it was the easiest plant she ever cared for!

Yes, it will grow roots, and yes you can plant it in a pot -- about a 12 inch pot -- and just water and keep it in a sunny place. I wouldn't transplant it into a pot until the foliage starts to grow up (or out) to about 12 inches, though.

Enjoy!
Reply:You can go ahead and plant it in dirt or potting soil. In a pot or even a spot outside (if you have a yard). It will like a lot of sunshine and a weekly watering. I hope you enjoy it, and try growing some other things as well. I had fun growing a pineapple last year.
Reply:Just depends on what you want. If you want a pretty vine to see each day in your kitchen, then by all means keep it in doors. But do pick up some toothpicks next time at the grocery store and get it off to a good start. Or do you want it in your flower bed of flourish and do well there but get killed next winter.

Just up to you.

Oh I forgot.....in the water you can put a few drops of red food coloring and the veins of the sweetpotato vines will be red. Really cool.

Reply:it will grow and grow , OMG WAS THAT A PUNCTUATION MARK anyway on with the answer , as i was saying it will grow and grow it will take over your kitchen, in a few months you will come home its roots will be on the sofa , there it will sit rooted to the spot watching tv , gardeners world probably lol then slowly , were talking months here , it will take over the bath room the bed room in fact evrey roon in the house, but by then it will be to powerfull to stop it will push your walls of your house down , again were talking months here , so there your poor lil house lies just rubble just cos you gave it a drink , moral of this story be carefull who you offer drinks to lol
Reply:I usually just grow them in water, they've got great foliage! (And yes, it will grow roots)
Reply:put in its natural home....in well drained soil .... don't let its feet stay wet ...it might rot.....
