Any suggestions for my extra large fern?

Three years ago me and my mom bought just small house plants at Wal-Mart, ferns in fact, my mom threw hers away after the season was over, but I have had mine for three years now and it keeps getting bigger and bigger. Right now it is in a 20" inch pot or about two feet by two feet. I water it every couple of days and it stays in the same spot everyday, in which this spot gets sun part of the day and shade the other part of the day.



Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do with my fern? It is so big that it looks awkward just sitting in my front landscaping and there really is no good place to put it. I do not want to kill it or throw it away being this is the only plant I have ever seemed to keep alive. During the winter time I have always brought it in the garage and covered it up and not watered it a drop, then I bring it back out in the spring. I have replanted it once a year and we just moved so it changed the space it was in. Any advice?

Hi, I bet my 3 ferns are bigger than yours! I wasn't boasting,just wanted to let you know I have a similar problem. Do what I did, I wasn't sure of how to split them so I took it to the local nursery,and they did the dirty work for me. That's how I ended up with three. Now their all about six foot wide, and down to the ground in length. They need it again,But don't be afraid to do it your self. Use a big sharp Knife and start from the middle top .Then just slice it. If you loose a few fronds, they'll grow back ferns are way hardier then people think. Give them some quick start to prevent transplant shock. Byeee
Reply:Plant it outside in a shady location(ferns like the shade not the sun) and leave it there. It will add young ones around it every year. I live in Wisconsin and I have quite a few at back fence. They die out for winter and then come back for the spring, they are very hardy plants. You can even eat the very young ones in the spring in salads or fried.
Reply:Well, they do keep growing. But it may be about as big as it will get.



I would think you can cut it in half, or thirds and have more plants. Next time you go to replant it just clean off the roots and snip out the sections. You kind of have to look at it to see where the cuts go. Then just pot up the pieces. They may take a little while to get back to looking full, but they will.



Then you can give one to your mom. And there will always be more.
Reply:I had a friend that had a plant that got to large for the house, and she donated it to the local zoo. The zoo still has it, and it keeps growing. Good luck.
