I want to plant a tomato plant on my patio in a 5 gallon plastic bucket. Should I drill holes in the bottom, or about 2 inches up the side? What should I use in the bottom of the bucket for drainage?
Container gardening; what is the best way to make a tomato planter from a 5 gallon bucket?
drill the holes in the bottom, put some good size stones in the bottom and continue with your potting soil and plants. Remember, container gardens dry quickly and tomatoes love a lot of water.
Reply:Talk about a conversation piece. Take a 5 gallon bucket and drill a 1" hole in the bottom. Take the plant and put in bucket so that the plant is hanging from the bottom. Fill with 16lb of potting soil and hang bucket. Watch it grow and you'll never have to steak it. Amazing! Good luck
