I've had the tank for about 6 months but the 2 fish I've had for 31/2 years...each one about 4 inches ...they're fantails. I have a 46 gallon tank. Can I add another fish even though it's been the 2 of them in there for so long? Water and plant life is stable. Will there be a dominance thing?
How do I add a new goldfish to my tank?
you should be able to. just make sure that you let the fish soak in the bag in you're tank for a good 20 minutes. Then just add the fish. Not the water that came from the pet store. This can contaminate you're good water. Also, be sure to add a small amount of water conditioner. Always a good idea when adding new things. I don't think goldfish have dominance issues. They should all just make good friends.
Reply:good luck
i hope they dont eat eachother
my fish did =[
Reply:Fish live on a predator- prey system and a fish must be one or the other. Most fish on average can go together but you will want to keep a tank with fish of about the same size. Typically the larger fish will be more dominant but depending on the species some fish are naturally aggressive toward other fish. Most goldfish are not naturally aggressive but try floating a bag with the new fish in the tank and observe for a while. If you ask me I see no reason why you could not add to your tank. Hope this helps!!!!!
Reply:Its hard to tell since some fish are more aggressive than others. What you can do is get a breeding box for fish if you don't have one (their kind of like clear boxes that you can put a pregnant fish in that hangs on the side of the tank in the water) which will keep them seperate, and you can see how they react to seeing another fish in their tank. Or a plastic bag with water.
Remember when you add a new fish to a tank, you'll want to float them for a while so they adjust to the temperature of the tank while in water they are used to, and add some of that same water when you add the fish.
But I think it should be okay to add your goldfish without it getting hurt.
Reply:just get the adult fish only or there will be fights in your tank and yes you can add one or more
Reply:Make sure the goldfish that you add is the same size as the two you already have. It's not necessarily a dominance thing, but the others will eat all the food and the smaller one would end up starving.
Fantails are more compatible with other fantails, black moors and orandas.
Reply:Yes you can put the fish in there. Nothing will happen. You will probably be happy having a different fish too!
