Lage weed type plant gone unattended has actually grown through and around my chain link fence. Parts of the metal fence are surrounded by the woody stem which is about 3 inches thick. Any ideas? Perhaps a torch to burn it off?
How do I remove a stump growing into a fence?
If the fence is embedded into the plant, then cutting it off and replacing that section would be easiest. Chain link is relatively inexpensive. Make sure you use a stump killer or plant killer at the base of the plant. Tar works as well. Dig down next to plant and cut off below ground level. Then use the killer. This way you can cover it with dirt like it never existed.
Reply:you could try splitting with wood chisels and a saw blade try cut tru most of the trunk dont burn the gavanized coating when heated puts off posionous gas and will ruin the fence
Reply:First you need to kill where the plant is coming from. Cut as much as you can away from the fence. Also cut the plant to about 3 to 4 inches above the ground from where it is growing. Go to the local store and buy some brush killer. Apply the spray to where the plant comes from the ground. The rest of the plant that is around the fence will die off now that it is not connected to the roots. This will make it easier to remove next spring. You may need to spray the root area again for the next year or two to make sure that the job is done. Good luck.
Reply:I have seen this happen lots of times, usually people just kill the plant by cutting it off at the base and trim off anything they can get to. It is usually easier to replace a section of chain link than to cut the wood off of the fence.
