I have a 5-6 inch oscar and a 4-5 inch plecostomus (those sucker fish that feed off the bottom and sides of the tank). Anyways the tank is 10 gallions. Is that big enough for these two fish? I know they will outgrow the tank in about a year or so. When will I know I should upgrade to a bigger tank?
Also, if they tank is more than big enough for these two fish, is there any fish that I can add to the tank that won't become dinner for my oscar? (I feed him 4, 28 cent goldfish once a month or so.. just to give him something to chase around) Or be attacked by the sucker fish?
Hehe one other question. I have 3 fake plants in the tank that are held down by the tank river rocks.(these rather large smooth rock, often found at river bottoms, anyways..almost every morning the plants have been pulled free and are floating at the surface. Is it the oscar that is yanking them free, thinking it's a real plant and able to eat it? Or is the sucker fish freeing them as he roots around in the rocks?
Is my fish tank big enough? And who is uprooting the plants?
i wouldn't go as far to say as they are sick, but they very well could get sick. or, the oscar will start to pick on the pleco because he doesn't have enough room. you should definitely upgrade, at least to a thirty gallon, for now. I'm going out on a limb to say that the oscar is pulling out the plants to try to make a bit more room for himself. you probably won't have any luck adding fish to the oscar, probably means 99% no. I'm suprised he hasn't started picking on the pleco yet. definitely get a bigger tank, and make sure you have adequate filtration and do water changes at least twice a month. adding uniodized salt to the tank will also help the fish heal and help prevent parasites and bacterial infections. good luck!
Reply:No,you need at least a good 50 gallon tank.Tiger oscars as well as red devil oscars grow pretty large and will uproot plants. The sucker fish is a good idea.It helped me reduce my water changes. however I almost doubled the filters over what was reccomended. Also you fish probably are aggitated by too warm water temperatures. Those fish are cramped and ill.Good luck, purchase a water testing kit and learn to use it.
Reply:sucker fish
Reply:the fish will only grow to the capacity of the tank. if you get a bigger tank then he will grow to that capacity +yor sucker fish is looking for crap from other fish maybee that is why your plants are being uprooted
Reply:Definitely the oscar uprooting the plants. And you seriously need a larger tank and soon. Oscars will exceed the size of their tanks. And other than feeders, lovely live snacks they are, the only thing you really want to put in with an oscar is another oscar of the same size. They tend to eat anything smaller than they are. I'll list some good websites that'll help. :)
