I have large holes in my lawn due to me pulling out weeds. I want to plant new grass seeds in those holes. Do i use top soil (the stuff i see used for gardens) and then put fertilizer on top and then stick the seeds 1/4 inch deep into the area?
Planting new Grass Seeds in Lawn - DO i use Top Soil?
It is better if you use a bit of top soil but not totally necessary. You don't plant the seeds, you spread them over as evenly as you can, cover with a bit of top soil and water really well.
Reply:I saw some stuff at Lowe's for filling in holes of grass. It's this green cement(it isn't cement) looking stuff you mix with water then put in the holes. I think it is made by Scott's who also makes this turfbuilder stuff. Possibly if you get a broadcast spreader and fill it with turfbuilder fertilizer the grass you already have will fill in the holes very quickly. I saw all this taking into account that I don't know what you mean by "large". If it is much larger you can get this cloth stuff you roll out with seeds in it. It looks green like grass and you water it. I would suggest loosening the soil underneath first with a tiller or at least a strong metal rake. Too bad you didn't use weed and feed fertilizer in the first place to save yourself the trouble of pulling weeds.
Reply:Follow the instructions on the bag of grass seed.
Reply:If you are determined to use Top Soil only use it to fill the holes. Plant the grass whether sprigs or seeds with a composted material, either Humus, Landscape Mix or Composted Manure. Water lightly daily for 7 to 14 days to allow the seeds to germinate. Once the grass emerges water as needed.
Reply:I did. And it really helped.
Reply:You don't NEED it, just seed it and water EVERYDAY. It should grow very well.
Reply:use Panama Red, let it dry thoroughly, then smoke
Reply:Top soil would improve your results but neccessary.Make sure to cover your seeds with hay to keep birds from them.
Reply:Depending how deep the holes are you may be better off using some top soil. For two reasons, firstly it will give you a flat level lawn afterwards, also it gives the grass seed a better start for growing.
Always allow 6 months for new grass to establish, then to stop the weeds use weed killer.
