Some Georgia clay got into my new fish pond during construction. Do I need to empty it and refill?

There is about a 1/4 inch of clay in the bottom and on the marginal shelves of my 300 gallon pond. I have not added fish or plants yet. The water is already murky but has only been in the pond for 3 days. Should I empty and refill before proceeding with living things or just let it sit for a few more days first?

Yes. Many people may not agree but you need to get this out so that it does not clog up your filter. If you can get the clay out without getting much of the water out, that will be fine. It doesn't all have to be out, but 1/4 of an inch is too much and should be taken care of.
Reply:if you have a good filter system a little bit of clay on the bottom is fine. i have a filter that is made from a 5 gallon bucket with a lid on it. it has 4 baby food jar size holes about an half inch from the bottom with hardware cloth on the inside where the holes are, then I put landscape cloth with small aquarium gravel in it, tye it closed with a zip tye and lay in on the bottom of the bucket then place your pump on the bag. cut a small opening along the edge of the lid as so the cord and tubing can have an area to leave the bucket. then my tubing goes through a UV filter to another filter before the water is returned to the pond. this helps to clean the water and help trap anything else that might be in the water. I have 2 waterponds nd ths is how I keep them clean.the clay that is in the water will in time settle to the bottum and as i said a little won't hurt anything. have had my ponds for 18 yrs.
