I don't really need them full by april because the point is for the guests to watch the plant grow as our love grows, get it? I'm on a very, very tight budget so I need something that I can maybe grow by seed, in a pot about 2 1/2 inches high?
Thanks! OK so if that wont work any other quick easy purple flowers to grow?
I saw your previous question and am glad you've been dissuaded in your first idea about Saint Paulias.
I've justlooked up purple flowers on google and it mentions hyssop. Now, hyssop has a lovely flower that comes out in July (in UK) and grows rapidly. What could work is that you buy 2 largish plants and break off (cut off) 3 - 4 inch shoots from them and pop 2 in each little pot with earth in it. In 3 weeks they will have rooted if kept from frost, and by April they will be small but viable.......It's a wonderful idea of yours and depending on how many guests you have you should be able to get masses of plants going. Once they have 'taken' they are completely hardy, will grow big and bushy over time and flourish, as I'm sure your marriage will.
They are easy to take cuttings from.....if you are uncertain....just google 'taking cuttings and you'll find all the advice you need......you don't need special soil or hormone rooting powder.
Lavender would do too, but would not really be ready to root early enough if you are in the UK.
Reply:Depending on where you live, you might be able to get clumps of gorgeous wild violets for free. You wouldn't need to grow them from seed- many people would be willing to dig a clump out of their backyard for you.
Another option is Johnny jump-up, pansy, or another small perennial. Shifting gears, heliotrope is stunning, and easy to grow- it also has a heavenly scent.
