What could have done this to my Sunflower?

I bought this beautiful sunflower plant, that was about 20 inches tall, four nice flowers and several buds on it. I planted it and the next morning when I saw it, it was a mutilated mess - Flowers shredded and thrown amok! Leaves full of holes, resembling some sort of bug - but it was so fast, overnight, and the flowers were just gnarled! What could have done this so quickly? I live in Canada, we have Rabbits, skunks and squirrels, woodpeckers and crows (Ive had problems with Crows before, but not to this extent - this plant was still tiny.

What could have done this to my Sunflower?
The Sunflower Bug. It eats sunflowers. It is a bug. It likes the sun. It likes flowers. It really likes sunflowers (and May showers).

Hope this helps.
Reply:This has happened to mine too, and I never figured out what it was. It still flowered though, and was pretty even if it had no leaves. This year I plan on spraying something on the plant, I have heard diluted Coke works. Try looking online under "homemade pesticides" and see what you can find.

Good luck!
Reply:Sunflowers attract squirrels, too. I once wapped a Mammoth 14" head in aluminum screening. It didn't work.
Reply:i planted 12 sunflowers at the first of spring. i noticed we had a new addition to our wild animals, it was a beautiful little bunny, brown with long ears. it was sooo cute. IT ATE THEM!! and now the darn thing is eating away at my morning glories!! I'm fit to be tied!! I'm gonna catch him and set him out far away were he will be happy and so will i.
