In Richmond VA. we have about 5 inches of dirt, then abour a foot of clay. I have a half acre of flat property that takes DAYS to dry out after the rain. I am looking for a plant or tree to help absorb some of the moisture and look nice at the same time. I have a Willow tree which does pretty well, but need more. Any ideas?
We have an insane amount of moisture in our yard. What kind of Trees or Large plants Can handle lots of water
River Birch does well with wet feet. You could also think about installing a bog garden. Here's how:

Reply:Take some cuttings off of the willow tree and plant them..
Reply:Here is a link from the VA Department of Foresty on Rain Gardens.

You should be able to find some plants/trees on this site that should fair well in a wet environment.
Reply:Besides willow, you can plant Swamp Maple trees. These are better than willows because their roots grow downward and not toward sewer pipes or water lines.
Reply:Short needle pines do well also.
